Recorded in April 1990 at Emerald Sound Studios and Masterfonics in Nashville, Rumor Has It was produced by Tony Brown and McEntire and became her first album to crack the mainstream top 40 of the Billboard 200. It includes four singles: “You Lie” and “Rumor Has It,” both number-one country hits, along with the platinum-certified “Fancy” and “Fallin’ Out of Love.” “Fancy,” a cover of the Bobbie Gentry story-song about a mother pushing her daughter toward a different life, became one of McEntire’s signature performances and later ranked among Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. The album achieved triple-platinum certification and was later selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry, cementing its place as one of the defining records of McEntire’s commercial peak.
