Released August 28, 2020 on Morton Recordings/Tyscot and self-produced by PJ Morton, Gospel According to PJ (From the Songbook of PJ Morton) reimagines the New Orleans singer-songwriter’s own catalog through a gospel lens, built around conversational interludes between Morton and his father, Bishop Paul S. Morton. The album features an extensive roster of gospel royalty, including Kirk Franklin, Kim Burrell, The Clark Sisters, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and was recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic via video collaboration from Morton’s New Orleans studio. The project topped Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, and its single “All in His Plan” reached number one on the Gospel Airplay chart, ultimately earning Morton the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album.
