Panic! at the Disco | Vices & Virtues | Vinyl

Produced by John Feldmann and Butch Walker, Vices & Virtues was written and recorded between April and July 2010 by vocalist Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith as a duo, following the 2009 departure of guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker to form The Young Veins. Selecting ten songs from roughly thirty demos, the pair layered in marimbas, xylophones, accordions, and synths, extending the theatrical, baroque-pop flourishes of the band’s debut while pushing Urie’s vocals to the forefront. Lead single ‘The Ballad of Mona Lisa’ and follow-up ‘Let’s Kill Tonight’ helped the album debut at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with 56,000 first-week copies, and it later earned RIAA Gold certification. Critics were divided on Urie’s lyricism but largely praised the record’s dense, eclectic arrangements as a sign of the band’s creative recharge.
