The Downward Spiral is Nine Inch Nails' 1994 second album, a harrowing concept record about self-destruction that fused industrial rock with abrasive electronic production, recorded partly in the house where the Manson Family murders took place. Trent Reznor's uncompromising songwriting on tracks like “Closer” and “Hurt” pushed industrial music into the mainstream, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 despite its bleak subject matter. This 2016 remaster restores the album's original sonic intensity for a record widely considered a landmark of 1990s alternative music.
