Backed by guitarists Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson and drummer Bernard Purdie, Simone tears through the Bessie Smith-inspired ‘I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl,’ a smoldering ‘Backlash Blues’ co-written with Langston Hughes, and a moody take on ‘The House of the Rising Sun.’ The record’s stripped-down grit stood apart from the pop arrangements of her earlier work and cemented her reputation as one of the era’s most fearless vocal interpreters.
