Bryter Layter is Nick Drake's 1970 second album, a more fully arranged, jazz-and-folk-inflected follow-up to Five Leaves Left, featuring instrumental contributions from members of Fairport Convention and horn and string arrangements by Robert Kirby. Despite its more accessible, lushly produced sound, the record sold poorly on release, a commercial disappointment that reportedly contributed to Drake's worsening depression and eventual retreat to the stark minimalism of Pink Moon. It's widely regarded as the most sonically accomplished entry in his tragically brief three-album catalog, now celebrated as a folk masterpiece.
