Singles “I'm Not Okay (I Promise)” and “Helena” combined theatrical, gothic imagery with pop-punk hooks that helped define the mid-2000s emo movement. The album's commercial breakthrough set the stage for the band's even bigger follow-up, The Black Parade, two years later.
