Milk Carton Kids | Prologue | Vinyl

Prologue was the free, self-released 2011 debut album from Americana duo The Milk Carton Kids, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, recorded informally and given away online to build the duo’s audience around their close, Everly Brothers-style harmonies and interlocking acoustic guitars. For its tenth anniversary in 2021, the duo issued a 3LP box set through their own label with Thirty Tigers, remastering the original nine-song album (now expanded with the bonus cut “Des Moines, IA”) and pairing it with two additional LPs of eighteen previously unreleased demos and live recordings tracing the evolution of key songs like “Michigan” and “New York.” The deluxe package includes a booklet with behind-the-scenes photos and an essay by critic Kim Ruehl. The set offers a rare look at the humble, homemade origins of a duo that would go on to multiple Grammy nominations for Album of the Year in the folk category.
