Hejira, released by Joni Mitchell in November 1976 on Asylum Records, is a travelogue album written during a cross-country drive and stretches of touring, including time on Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue. Produced with longtime engineer Henry Lewy, the record is best known for the interplay between Mitchell’s open-tuned guitar and Jaco Pastorius’s fretless bass, with guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer John Guerin, and a harmonica cameo from Neil Young on “Furry Sings the Blues” rounding out the sessions. Lead single “Coyote” introduced the album’s restless, road-worn songwriting, and Hejira reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200, earning a gold certification.
