Released on Ndeya, the label Hassell founded late in his career, Seeing Through Sound continues the loose ‘Pentimento’ series exploring layered, hybridized textures that blend Hassell’s signature processed trumpet with ambient electronics and world-music rhythmic elements, the sound he termed ‘Fourth World’ music decades earlier. The album stands as one of the last studio statements from an artist whose fusion of Indian classical training, minimalist composition study under Stockhausen, and electronic processing influenced generations of ambient and world-fusion musicians, including collaborators like Brian Eno. Hassell passed away in June 2021, not long after the album’s release, giving Seeing Through Sound added weight as a late-career culmination of his singular sonic vocabulary.
