Produced by Bob Johnston and recorded live during two January 1968 performances at Folsom State Prison, the album captures Cash and his band — joined by June Carter, the Statler Brothers, and Carl Perkins — delivering raw, unvarnished performances for an audience of inmates who responded viscerally to songs about crime, punishment, and redemption. The title track “Folsom Prison Blues,” originally released in 1955, became a top-40 pop hit in this live version, and the album shot to #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart while crossing into the pop top 15. At Folsom Prison is credited with resurrecting Cash’s commercial career after a rocky mid-1960s stretch and remains one of the most acclaimed live albums in American music, later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry.
