Produced by Rick Rubin as the fourth entry in the American Recordings series, the album pairs Cash’s aged, weathered baritone with spare acoustic arrangements across a mix of originals, traditional folk songs, and covers spanning Nine Inch Nails, Simon & Garfunkel, and Depeche Mode. His cover of “Hurt,” accompanied by a stark music video filmed shortly before his death, won a Grammy and is widely regarded as one of the most powerful cover recordings ever made. Recorded while Cash’s health was visibly declining — he died in September 2003, months after release — the album became a critically revered coda to his career, later certified platinum and consistently ranked among the best albums of the 2000s.
