Produced by Jim Wirt and recorded in six weeks at 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica on analog tape, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. found Incubus fusing funk, hip-hop, jazz, and heavy metal into a sound that helped define the late-90s nu-metal and rap-rock crossover alongside turntablist DJ Kilmore’s scratching. Singles ‘A Certain Shade of Green,’ ‘Redefine,’ and ‘New Skin’ brought the band its first real radio traction, and the album eventually went RIAA Gold, selling nearly a million copies in the US and over a million worldwide by the following decade. Pitchfork later praised the record’s ability to ‘combine all sorts of shit without sounding like a mess,’ and it has since been cited by outlets like Revolver and VH1 among the era’s essential and underrated nu-metal albums. This 2013 Legacy 180g reissue spreads the album across four vinyl sides and restores bonus cuts ‘Idiot Box’ and ‘Magic Medicine’ alongside a hidden closing track.
