Recorded at Chess Records’ Chicago studio and released on the Checker label in 1968, Super Super Blues Band throws three towering blues personalities into a single unrehearsed session, following the label’s earlier all-star pairing Super Blues. Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Bo Diddley trade verses, jabs, and bragging rights across extended blues jams and stripped-down studio banter, with Wolf famously refusing to defer to his rivals. The results are less a polished album than a document of three legends’ competing musical languages colliding in real time, resulting in what one reviewer called a ‘stylistic train wreck’ that’s nonetheless endlessly entertaining. This colored-vinyl pressing reintroduces the session to collectors decades after its original release. It remains a cult favorite for blues fans curious to hear Chess’s biggest stars unguarded and off the cuff.
