Recorded at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco and produced by David Rubinson with Hancock, Thrust arrived just months after the blockbuster Head Hunters and pushed the band’s electric jazz-funk fusion even further, with new drummer Mike Clark bringing a tighter, more syncopated pocket. The album’s four extended tracks — ‘Palm Grease,’ ‘Actual Proof,’ ‘Butterfly,’ and ‘Spank-A-Lee’ — lean on Bennie Maupin’s saxophone textures, Paul Jackson’s bass grooves, and Bill Summers’s percussion to build some of the era’s most sampled and studied fusion grooves. ‘Actual Proof’ grew out of Hancock’s connection to the 1973 film ‘The Spook Who Sat by the Door,’ while ‘Palm Grease’ later turned up in the 1974 film ‘Death Wish.’ Thrust reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart and No. 13 on the Billboard 200, cementing Hancock’s Headhunters era as one of jazz-funk’s commercial and creative high points; this Music on Vinyl 180-gram pressing preserves the album’s deep low end for the format it was built for.
