Assembled by director Perry Henzell to accompany his film of the same name, The Harder They Come compiles some of the finest Jamaican singles of the late 1960s and early ’70s alongside three songs recorded specifically for the film by star Jimmy Cliff, including the title track. The soundtrack features foundational reggae and rocksteady cuts from Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals, the Melodians, and the Slickers, effectively serving as many listeners’ first exposure to the genre outside Jamaica. Its blend of outlaw storytelling and irresistible rhythms — ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want,’ ‘Rivers of Babylon,’ ‘Pressure Drop’ — helped popularize reggae internationally years before Bob Marley’s global breakthrough. Widely regarded as one of the most important soundtrack albums ever released, it remains a cornerstone reggae compilation. This Island Records vinyl pressing restores the original 12-track program.
