Released April 21, 2008 on Sub Pop and produced by Mickey Petralia, Flight of the Conchords compiles genre-parodying songs Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie had performed on their HBO series, including the deadpan R&B send-up “Business Time,” the French-language duet “Foux du Fafa,” and the twin-rap battle “Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros.” The album debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200, sold roughly 52,000 copies in its first week, and hit number 1 in New Zealand, going gold in the US and double platinum at home — a remarkable commercial showing for a comedy record. It won multiple honors at the 2008 New Zealand Music Awards including Album of the Year, and tracks “Business Time” and “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)” were released as downloadable content for the Rock Band video game. Critics generally praised the duo’s genre pastiche and deadpan delivery, with the album landing in the high 70s on Metacritic’s aggregate score.
