Rocks the House captures Etta James live at the New Era Club in Nashville over two nights in September 1963, released on Chess subsidiary Argo Records later that year. Stripped of studio polish, the album finds James tearing through R&B and blues staples — Ray Charles’s “What’d I Say,” Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want),” and B.B. King’s “Sweet Little Angel” among them — backed by a tight combo of guitar, bass, dual drums, organ, and tenor sax. It’s widely regarded as one of the great early 1960s R&B live albums and a defining showcase for the raw power of James’s voice.
