Produced by Jay Joyce, who would go on to produce nearly every subsequent Eric Church album, Sinners Like Me introduced Church’s gruff, rock-inflected take on mainstream country with singles “How ‘Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines,” “Guys Like Me,” and the title track. The album reached number 29 on the Billboard 200 and number seven on Top Country Albums, a modest start that belied its eventual platinum certification years later. Tracks like “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag” signaled Church’s reverence for outlaw-era heroes such as Merle Haggard, while “Lightning” earned a music video despite never being issued as a single. In retrospect, critics and fans point to Sinners Like Me as the foundation for Church’s rise into one of country’s defining arena-rock-leaning voices of the following decade.
