Produced by Norman Granz and recorded in August 1956, Ella and Louis paired Ella Fitzgerald’s pristine, agile phrasing with Louis Armstrong’s warm, gravelly voice and trumpet across a set of Great American Songbook standards. Backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio with drummer Buddy Rich, the relaxed, intimate sessions produced enduring versions of songs like “Isn’t This a Lovely Day” and “Moonlight in Vermont” that remain benchmark recordings of vocal jazz duet singing. The album’s success led to two follow-up collaborations, Ella and Louis Again and the Porgy and Bess concept album. This 180-gram pressing restores the original 1956 Verve session to vinyl with improved fidelity.
