Released in 1959 on Columbia Records, Time Out was a bold experiment in odd meters at a time when jazz was almost universally recorded in 4/4 time, with the quartet moving through 9/8 on “Blue Rondo a la Turk” and the now-famous 5/4 of Paul Desmond’s “Take Five.” Despite initial skepticism from Columbia executives over its commercial prospects, the album became a massive crossover success, and “Take Five” remains one of the best-selling jazz singles of all time. Time Out was the first jazz album certified platinum and has been preserved in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry and the Grammy Hall of Fame. The interplay of pianist Dave Brubeck, saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello set a new standard for rhythmic sophistication in jazz.
