Produced by Richard Bock for Pacific Jazz and recorded with pianist Russ Freeman’s trio, Chet Baker Sings paired the trumpeter’s already-famous horn playing with an intimate, breathy vocal style that critics initially dismissed but audiences embraced. ‘My Funny Valentine’ became the album’s enduring signature and one of the most covered vocal-jazz standards of the twentieth century, alongside readings of ‘But Not for Me,’ ‘There Will Never Be Another You,’ and ‘I Fall in Love Too Easily.’ Despite skepticism from Freeman and mixed early critical reaction to Baker’s understated phrasing, the record was a commercial hit and later influenced the development of bossa nova through admirers like João Gilberto. In 2001 the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, cementing its status as one of cool jazz’s defining vocal statements.
