Welcome to Hard Times is Charley Crockett’s 2020 album and the first release under his self-styled “Gulf & Western” banner, blending honky-tonk, blues, and country-soul into thirteen original songs about hard luck and hard living. Produced by Mark Neill (Black Keys, Los Lobos) and released on Crockett’s own Son of Davy label via Thirty Tigers, the record was cut with a lean, vintage-toned studio band that leans into Crockett’s Gulf Coast roots. Lead tracks “Welcome to Hard Times,” “Run Horse Run,” and “Don’t Cry” were issued as singles ahead of the July 2020 release, arriving as Crockett’s profile as one of Americana’s most prolific working artists continued to rise. The album extended his run of acclaimed, rootsy releases that helped cement his reputation as a modern heir to classic Texas songwriting.
