Recorded in two May 1959 sessions at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio and produced by Teo Macero, Mingus Ah Um showcases bassist-composer Charles Mingus at the height of his powers, leading a nine-piece band through pieces honoring Duke Ellington (‘Open Letter to Duke’), Lester Young (‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’), and Charlie Parker (‘Bird Calls’). ‘Fables of Faubus,’ a biting protest against Arkansas governor Orval Faubus’s resistance to school integration, had its lyrics excised by Columbia and only appeared with vocals on a later Candid recording. The original LP trimmed several tracks to fit vinyl’s time constraints; those edits were restored on reissues beginning in 1979. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the National Recording Registry, Mingus Ah Um is widely regarded as Mingus’s masterpiece and one of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded. This DOL blue vinyl pressing brings the record’s blend of gospel, blues, and big-band swing back to shelves in vivid color.
