Cannonball Adderley | Somethin Else | Vinyl

Recorded on March 9, 1958 and produced by Alfred Lion with engineer Rudy Van Gelder at the boards, Somethin’ Else stands as saxophonist Cannonball Adderley’s only date as leader for Blue Note. Miles Davis, appearing as a sideman rather than leader, is thought to have shaped much of the material and famously reworked ‘Autumn Leaves’ into the album’s centerpiece. The quintet is rounded out by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Blakey. The title track, a Davis original, and the moody take on ‘Love for Sale’ helped cement the record’s status as a hard bop cornerstone, later selected for the Penguin Guide to Jazz’s Core Collection. Coming just a year before Davis convened the Kind of Blue sessions, it’s often cited as a preview of the modal, spacious sound he’d soon make famous.
