Live in Cook County Jail was recorded September 10, 1970, when B.B. King performed for over 2,000 inmates at the Chicago jail, produced by Bill Szymczyk and released on ABC in 1971. King and his band leaned into slow, aching blues, including a version of his then-recent hit “The Thrill Is Gone,” that resonated deeply with the incarcerated audience. The album became King’s only No. 1 on the R&B chart, reached No. 25 on the Billboard 200, and drew press attention to prison conditions that spurred King to found a foundation for inmate rehabilitation the following year. It was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and ranked No. 499 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list.
