Recorded in October 1958 and released on Blue Note in 1959, Moanin’ features the classic Jazz Messengers lineup of Art Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Timmons’s title composition, with its call-and-response, gospel-derived melody, became a defining anthem of the hard bop movement and one of the most recognizable jazz themes of its era. Golson also contributed the compositions “Along Came Betty” and “Blues March,” both of which became jazz standards in their own right. Produced by Alfred Lion and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, Moanin’ is widely regarded as one of the finest small-group jazz albums ever recorded, and this edition is part of Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl Series.
