Written, performed, and produced solely by Richard D. James, the album followed his self-titled Selected Ambient Works and pushed his sound into denser, more rhythmically aggressive territory while retaining moments of ambient calm. It was supported by the “Ventolin” single and EP and reached #24 on the UK Albums Chart. Entertainment Weekly awarded it an A- and Spin gave it 8/10 upon release, and Pitchfork later ranked it among the 13 best IDM albums of all time in a 2017 retrospective. The record remains a touchstone of 1990s electronic music for its inventive sound design and stark, uncanny cover art.
