Recorded in late 1963 for Blue Note and produced by Alfred Lion, Black Fire introduced Andrew Hill’s angular, harmonically adventurous writing to a wide jazz audience, backed by tenor great Joe Henderson, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes (a late replacement for Philly Joe Jones). The seven originals, from the churning title track to the knotty ‘Subterfuge,’ balance hard-bop drive with the loose, exploratory phrasing that made Hill a favorite of critics and fellow musicians alike. This Tone Poet Series pressing, mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, restores the record’s full dynamic range for a new generation of listeners. Black Fire remains one of the most acclaimed entries in Hill’s catalog and a touchstone of 1960s Blue Note modernism.
