Co-created with producer and multi-instrumentalist Carlos Niño, New Blue Sun finds the OutKast legend abandoning rap entirely in favor of extended, improvisatory pieces built around an array of wooden and digital flutes, marking one of the most surprising artistic left turns of his career. The album’s eight tracks carry deliberately elaborate, comedic titles that wink at listener expectations of a ‘rap album’ while delivering meditative new age and ambient jazz soundscapes instead. It earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Jazz Album, with opening track ‘I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a “Rap” Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time’ additionally nominated for Best Instrumental Composition.
