People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is A Tribe Called Quest's 1990 debut, a playful, jazz-sampling record that helped pioneer alternative hip-hop's break from the harder-edged sounds dominating the genre at the time. “Can I Kick It?,” built around a Lou Reed sample, and “Bonita Applebum” introduced the group's laid-back, socially conscious style and Q-Tip's distinctive nasal flow. The album set the stage for the group's more celebrated follow-ups, establishing their place within the Native Tongues collective alongside De La Soul.
