Meat Is Murder is the Smiths' 1985 second album, a more politically charged and musically diverse follow-up to their self-titled debut, touching on corporal punishment, class, and animal rights. The title track's stark condemnation of the meat industry remains one of the most explicit pro-vegetarian statements in popular music, reportedly convincing many listeners, including bandmates, to change their diets. Johnny Marr's expanding guitar textures across the record showed the band pushing beyond the jangle-pop of their debut into new musical territory.
