South of Heaven is Slayer's 1988 fourth album, a deliberately slower, more atmospheric follow-up to the breakneck speed of Reign in Blood, a change the band made specifically to avoid repeating themselves. Tracks like the title cut and “Mandatory Suicide” show a greater emphasis on dynamics and dread-building tension rather than pure velocity. The gamble paid off critically, with the record now considered one of Slayer's most essential and structurally ambitious albums.
