Monster is R.E.M.'s 1994 ninth album, a heavier, more fuzzed-out guitar-rock record made deliberately in reaction to the quieter, acoustic-leaning Automatic for the People that preceded it. “What's the Frequency, Kenneth?” and “Bang and Blame” showed the band embracing distortion and a rawer sound than the introspective ballads that had defined their previous release. The album debuted at #1 in both the US and UK, proving R.E.M. could shift direction dramatically without losing their massive audience.
