Dummy is Portishead's 1994 debut album, a foundational record of the trip-hop genre, built on cinematic, sample-based production drawing from film scores and jazz, layered beneath Beth Gibbons's haunting, torch-singer vocal delivery. “Glory Box” and “Sour Times” captured a moody, cinematic atmosphere that immediately distinguished the Bristol band from their trip-hop peers Massive Attack and Tricky. The album won the Mercury Prize and remains a defining, widely sampled document of 1990s British electronic music.
