Stranger in the Alps is Phoebe Bridgers' 2017 debut, produced by Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska. Built on fingerpicked guitar, soft strings, and Bridgers' close-miked vocals, the record pairs devastating lyrics with a dry sense of humor. Standouts include “Motion Sickness,” the sharp breakup song that became her breakthrough, along with “Funeral,” “Scott Street,” and “Smoke Signals.” The title nods to an edited-for-TV line from The Big Lebowski, and the album's quiet intensity set the stage for Punisher and her work with boygenius.
