Horses is Patti Smith's 1975 debut album, a landmark fusion of raw punk energy with poetic, literary songwriting, produced by John Cale and opening with the now-iconic line “Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine.” Robert Mapplethorpe's stark, androgynous cover photograph of Smith became nearly as influential as the music itself, an image that helped define punk's visual identity. It's widely regarded as one of the most influential albums to emerge from the CBGB scene, a foundational text linking punk to poetry and performance art.
