Far Beyond Driven is Pantera's 1994 sixth album, an even heavier, more extreme follow-up to Vulgar Display of Power, pushing the band's groove metal sound into some of the most crushing territory of their entire catalog. Phil Anselmo's increasingly guttural vocal delivery and Dimebag Darrell's punishing riffs on “5 Minutes Alone” showed a band deliberately outdoing their own prior heaviness rather than chasing more mainstream accessibility. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, an unusually mainstream commercial peak for a record of such uncompromising sonic intensity, a rare feat for extreme metal.
