In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is Neutral Milk Hotel's 1998 second and final album, a lo-fi, surrealist indie folk record loosely inspired by Jeff Mangum's reading of Anne Frank's diary. Built on distorted horns, singing saw, and Mangum's raw, unfiltered vocal delivery, the record's dense imagery and emotional intensity found only a modest audience on release. It's since become one of the most influential cult albums in indie rock, with its reputation growing steadily in the decades since the band's breakup.
