The Universe Smiles Upon You is Khruangbin's 2015 debut album, an instrumental fusion of Thai funk, soul, and reverb-heavy psychedelic textures from the Houston-based trio, drawing heavily on 1960s and '70s Thai music the band discovered through vintage cassette compilations. Mark Speer's melodic, echoing guitar lines and Laura Lee's understated bass established the atmospheric, largely wordless sound the band would build on across their subsequent releases. The record's slow-building cult following helped establish Khruangbin as one of the most distinctive instrumental groups of the following decade.
