The College Dropout is Kanye West's 2004 debut, built on soul-sampling production and comedic skits weaving together themes of school, faith, and ambition. Singles “Through the Wire,” recorded while West's jaw was wired shut after a car accident, and “Jesus Walks” showed a rapper willing to be vulnerable and openly religious in a genre that rarely allowed either. The album won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and set the template for the genre-blending production style West would build on for the rest of the decade.
