The Tree of Forgiveness is John Prine's 2018 eighteenth studio album, his first collection of entirely new original songs in over a decade, made with producer Dave Cobb and featuring guest vocals from Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell. “When I Get to Heaven,” a wry, joyful meditation on mortality, became a beloved late-career highlight from an artist whose plainspoken songwriting had long been celebrated by fellow musicians. The album became his highest-charting release ever, a fitting late-career triumph shortly before his death from COVID-19 complications in 2020.
