Produced by Dave Cobb after original collaborator Ryan Adams stepped back from the project, Southeastern was tracked with Isbell determined to sing every line clean and un-tuned, capturing performances as they happened rather than polishing them after the fact. Written just after Isbell’s recovery from alcohol addiction and finished only days before his wedding, the songs confront illness, mortality, sobriety, and survival with unusual directness, most notably on the opening track “Cover Me Up.” The album debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200 and became a critical breakthrough, widely cited as the record that reestablished Isbell as one of Americana’s premier songwriters following his exit from Drive-By Truckers. It has since appeared on numerous best-of-the-decade and greatest-albums lists, including Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums.
