The Soft Bulletin is the Flaming Lips' 1999 ninth album, a lush, orchestral pop record built on layered strings and unconventional percussion, made after the band abandoned drums entirely for much of the recording process. Wayne Coyne's meditations on mortality, science, and human frailty gave the record an emotional depth that surprised critics familiar with the band's earlier, weirder psych-rock output. It's routinely ranked among the greatest albums of the 1990s, widely considered the moment the Flaming Lips fully realized their artistic ambitions.
