Recorded piecemeal between 2017 and 2020 at Nashville’s Compass Sound and RCA Studio A along with Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, Starting Over was produced by Dave Cobb and Stapleton himself. Stapleton has described the songwriting as more reactive and in-the-moment than his earlier records, and the album includes two covers of his songwriting hero Guy Clark alongside originals like the title track, “Cold,” and “You Should Probably Leave.” It debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart and number three on the Billboard 200, and went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Critics praised its sparse, uncluttered arrangements and Stapleton’s soulful, blues-inflected vocals.
