Self-produced through Thompson’s own C&B Productions and recorded at Easy Street Studios in London, Hopelessly in Love helped define the British lovers rock sound of the early 1980s, fusing soulful vocals with reggae rhythms and melancholic songwriting. Released independently on the Carib Gems label, the album sold an estimated 35,000 copies despite minimal radio support, and its title track won Best Song at the 1982 GLR Reggae Awards. The Guardian later included it on its list of 1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die, citing it as a defining document of the lovers rock scene’s mostly female vocalists blending soul and reggae. Thompson’s warm, understated delivery on songs like ‘Simply in Love’ and the title cut made her one of the genre’s most respected voices. This 40th anniversary reissue restores the album for a new generation of reggae and soul listeners.
